The Mascot Mine claim was staked in 1899 as the Mascot Fraction on a steeply sloping face of Nickel Plate Mountain. Its rugged location and isolation among claims owned by competing companies made access too costly, and it lay dormant for over 30 years.

With a sudden rise in gold prices in 1936, buildings were constructed on seemingly impossible terrain and mining began in earnest. By the time the mine closed in 1949 it had yielded eight tons of gold.
Today you can take a tour of the Mascot Mine and walk amongst buildings constructed on the precipitous rocky slope.
